Cut Off Operator

Also, the ”brawn” and the “brains”  of the foundry.  More skilled than shake out and cut off. Knowledge of where the casting is and the ingates and risers are located. The saw is large and heavy and a considerable amount of knowledge of what you are cutting is important to the success of doing this job.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Wears proper PPE as required
  • Removes gates and risers on rough castings with cut off saws
  • Fills in for grinder and finishers as required
  • Observe good housekeeping and safety habits, follow CBF policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Thorough knowledge of abrasive saws, hand grinders and pneumatic hammers
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental requirements

Molder

The “head” of the foundry. Without our molders, we have nothing to pour! From big to small, common to exotic, every aspect from feeding to gating to pour speed is unique to each job. It is the molder’s responsibility to determine what and how all of these things get done.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Wears proper PPE as required
    • Receives orders for set up of molds
    • Determines the correct flask size
    • Determines the correct riser size and quantity
    • Determines the correct gating system to be used
    • Check and test the sand to ensure the correct moisture range of ___%
    • Assist furnace tender pour molds as required (two pot pours or more)
    • Keeps the workstation and mold floor area clean
    • Follows all CBF policies and procedures and performs other duties as assigned

    • Knowledge of safety and environmental requirements
    • Working knowledge of sand cast pouring practices

    Furnace Tender

    The “heart” of the foundry. After the molders have completed their job, the furnace tender steps into lead. Their job is to melt the proper alloy to the desired temperature and pour castings with the proper pouring technique and speed, with a highly trained team.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

        • Wears proper PPE as required
        • Ensures that furnace walls are smooth
        • Only lights furnaces with propane lance-never paper or cardboard
        • Performs ring test on all crucibles before loading into furnace
        • Crucibles are cleaned and stored properly
        • Crucibles are loaded into the furnace properly
        • Gas ports are open and unobstructed
        • Maintains distance between bottom of lid and crucible of 2-1/2” maximum
        • Checks that pedestals are flat, clean and not chipped
        • Under the furnace area is kept clean
        • Metal drainage holes are kept open
        • Performs tuck point repairs to interior furnace walls
        • Performs tuck point repairs to top of furnace to lids seal properly with no excessive flame
        • Takes a minimum of two temperature checks- pull and pour
        • Takes chemical samples as required
        • Makes additions as required to make heat grade ordered
        • Maximize direct pouring of heats, minimize indirect pour to ingot. Maximize heat sizes per orders
        • Reports accurate information on daily furnace report
        • Observe good housekeeping and safety habits, follow CBF policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned.

        Grinder/Shakeout

        The “brawn” of the foundry. After the molder and furnace tender complete their jobs, we need to shake out and clean up the castings by grinding. This job is more physical than cerebral…but every bit as important as any other job in the foundry.

              • Wears proper PPE as required
              • Receives Job Orders for priority
              • Determines the best techniques to clean up rough castings
              • Removing extra metal where the riser gates have been cut off
              • Providing the surface finish required-rough or smooth
              • Assists the furnace tender pour molds as required
              • Identifies defects in castings and advises the general foreman for direction
              • Observes good housekeeping and safety habits, follows CBF policies and procedures and performs other duties as assigned.

              Shipping and Receiving

              Under general supervision, the Shipping/Receiving Operator is responsible for managing the shipping/receiving bay.

                      • Prepares customer’s orders to be shipped or picked up
                      • Loads/unloads trucks
                      • Delivers orders
                      • Assists the furnace tender pour molds as required
                      • Identifies defects in castings and advises the general foreman for direction
                      • Cut Barstock and Foundry Orders
                      • Professional behaviors when speaking with customers/vendors
                      • Observe good housekeeping and safety habits, follow CBF policies and procedures, and perform other duties as assigned.
